Slate Tools
Our inventory is of time-tested tools for those in the slate trade. Modern technology makes for greater durability of materials but the tools have remained unchanged since their advent.
LEFT HANDED SLATE HAMMER
RIGHT HANDED SLATE HAMMER
This hammer does everything. Used to hammer in or remove nails, the pointed end punches holes in the slate and the beveled shaft is used to cut slate with a chopping action.
We take care of our lefties in the trade by reversing the bevel on the shaft and moving the claw to the other side.
SLATE CUTTER
SLATE RIP
This tool is slid under the slate and hooked to the fastening nail. A sharp blow with a hammer or twist and pull by the slater pulls the nail free, enabling the slate to be removed.
These tools are mounted on a board and used in the manner of a paper cutter to trim and shape slate.
SLATE STAKE
The original cutting arrangement was to drive this stake into a walk-board or rafter and rest the slate along the horizontal, to be cut with a slate hammer. It still works.
